Winter is still upon us so it is not yet time to do a great deal on the allotment, heavy snow and frosts can still appear well into March.

If the soil has dried out a bit then dig over the plot, adding as much rotted manure or compost as you can, either dig it in or lay it over the top for earthworms to drag down.

If you have prepared seed beds then cover them with plastic or old carpet to warm them up.

If the soil is ready then you can plant broad beans, shallots and early peas. Fruit trees and bushes should also be planted now whilst they are still dormant.
